dc.description.abstract | Potential deepwater oil blowouts are a challenge and cause disastrous problems if not prevented. The presence of the well head at depths of greater than 1000 feet renders it impossible for human intervention, since the pressure is very high and temperature extremely low. This signifies the complexity of the situation and the need for considering all scenarios to prevent a blowout and contain it successfully if it happens. Therefore, the problem the report deals with is two-fold: Dealing with the prevention of deepwater blowouts, and controlling those blowouts in the "what-if" scenario that they happen. If a blowout does occur, it poses a threat to human life, expensive equipment and the surrounding environment. If not prevented, a blowout can lead to the expansion of hydracarbons up the drillpipe that eventually reach the oil platform above, and result in an explosion that can risk human lives and machinery. Consequently, such an explosion would lead to a leak in oil and gas from deep inside the well into the ocean water which endangers the environment. | en_US |
