Angell, Linda
The eastern German rail system is operating with one half the line network of western Germany, but approximately the same numer of employees and amount of freight carriage. The two rail systems are proportionately about the same size (Railway Lines to Area Ratio). The eastern German road network proportionately is much smaller than the western (Main Roads to Area Ratio), but transports 83% as much freight as western Germany. The inland waterway system in eastern Germany is proportionately somewhat larger than western Germany (Waterways to Area Ratio), and transports approx. the same amount of freight. In every east German modal system a substandard infrastructure handles a disproportionate amount of freight compared to the west. This indicates that Eastern Germany could be extremely efficient with a modern, state-of-the-art transportation infrastructure.

The tourism industry will be shaped by the growth and development of the metaverse in the coming decades. Virtual reality (VR) will enable the creation of virtual worlds, avatars, digital twins, and new social networks. These technologies can be utilized in tourism to enable travelers to preview real-world experiences, to enhance experiences while on-site, to relive experiences after travel, or in some cases to even substitute for travel. Given the metaverse’s transformative potential, empirical investigation of VR is clearly warranted. Studies of VR tourism typically choose a single specific VR application and investigate its impact on adoption or user satisfaction. This application-level focus is a significant limitation. We therefore evaluate multiple heritage tourism applications as well as VR hardware in a comprehensive and structured analysis from the user experience (UX) perspective. Our content analysis of user interviews reveals 13 factors that shape users’ overall perceptions about VR. These factors are grouped into categories related to presentation of the VR content, the content itself, and the functionality of the hardware and software. Our analysis also reveals three design dilemmas for creators of VR heritage tourism content for the metaverse. Implications and an agenda for future research are included.

This paper provides a synthesis of theoretical and empirical work related to the professionalization of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from a knowledge-based perspective.
A systematic literature review consisting of three major steps of planning, conducting, and reporting is conducted. Articles are identified, selected, and deductively coded. Quantitative and qualitative methods are employed to analyze the articles. The finalized list includes 78 articles and 48 journals, with the oldest article published in 1980 and the most recent articles published in 2022.
The findings showed that the empirical works (n=69) outnumbered the conceptual works (n=9). Most articles focused on the organizational level of analysis and identified causal conditions, modes, intervening conditions, and consequences. A multidimensional characteristic of professionalization emerged inductively as an additional attribute.
This paper provides a synthesis of the current literature and offers a research agenda to academics and practitioners interested in the professionalization of SMEs from a knowledge-based perspective.

This chapter focuses on environmental management systems (EMS) in public sector organisations (PSOs). Our objectives are to 1) explain what is an EMS, describe the two main EMS standards (ISO 14001 and EMAS) and how to implement them in PSOs, 2) present the benefits of EMS adoption in PSOs, and 3) present the key factors of successful EMS implementation in PSOs. The major benefits of EMS implementation in PSOs are improved environmental management practices, environmental awareness and image, organizational cost-efficiency, and environmental performance. The major key success factors are management's support, employees' and managers' awareness, competence and involvement, adoption of a collaborative management approach, allocation of sufficient organizational resources, and stakeholder involvement. We conclude by identifying interesting avenues for future research. This chapter will assist EMS scholars and practitioners in better understanding the specific issues related to EMS implementation in PSOs.
